But chick-flick Turning 30!!! fails to make an impact at the box-office.

But chick-flick Turning 30!!! fails to make an impact at the box-office.

2011 has started off on a good note for the Deol family as their comedy Yamla Pagla Deewana is the first big hit of this year. According to trade analysts, the movie, which sees Dharmendra sharing screen space with his sons Sunny and Bobby after the 2007 drama Apne, has done excellent business in the first three days both in India and the overseas. However, the same can not be said about Turning 30!!!,which has failed to do good business across the country.

Trade analyst Amod Mehra said,YPD is a super-hit. It has done a net business of Rs 23 crore in the first three days. It had steady collections on Monday too. It has also done very good business overseas especially in Dubai, the United Kingdom, the United States and Canada. It has definitely done better in single-screens than in multiplexes. The total cost of the comedy is Rs 33 crore. It is expected to do a worldwide business of Rs 45 crore including satellite rights.

Mehra elaborated that YPD made eight crore on Friday. Though there was a slight drop on Saturday,it jumped back to eight-nine crore on Sunday, he said. But he added that Turning 30!!! was a washout. The audiences are not identifying with it and its not up to the mark.

Another industry insider,on condition of anonymity, said,YPD has done a net business of Rs 22-23 crore all over India. Turning 30 is a complete disaster. The figures are not even worth quoting.

Samir Karnik is glad that his effort of bringing together the Deols in a full-fledged comedy has paid off. The director-producer said, Earlier other movies were supposed to be the biggest hits in northern India but now YPD is being considered as the benchmark. He added that the movie, which was released in 2000 cinemas across the globe, had done a net business of Rs 28-30 crore in the first three days.

According to industry insiders, the movie has bright prospects in the future. Explaining the projections, trade analyst N P Yadav said,YPD is expected to do a net business of five crore in Punjab, six to seven crore in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh and two crore in Rajasthan in the coming weeks. In Central Provinces (C.P.),it is likely to earn a net sum of one-and-a-half while in Central India,it will earn anywhere between Rs 90 lakh to one crore. It is a bigger hit than No One Killed Jessica that released on January 7, he said.

As expected,YPD is doing brisk business in the North as it is a stronghold of the Deols. According to Ashish Saksena,COO of BIG Cinemas, the film has had a 60 per cent occupancy from Friday to Monday. He said,It is doing well in Northern and Western India. But even Turning 30!!! is doing brisk business at multiplexes. Prakhar Joshi,Head Programming PVR,said,Turning 30!!!s gross box-office collections were Rs 16 crore. Considering its budget and limited release,it has done good business.

Despite trade analysts declaring Turning 30!!! as a dud,the films director and producer are happy with the response to the film. Alankrita said,The response has been good at Bengaluru,Pune,South Delhi and Gurgaon. While there was 80-90 per cent occupancy in Chandigarh,it was housefull in Indore. It had an opening of 48 percent across India.

Prakash Jha,who has produced the chick-flick,said,I havent got the figures but despite having a limited release, the numbers are only increasing day by day. It was released in 125 screens and had two or three shows. Considering that its a small film catering to a niche audience with a modest star cast, its doing good business.

Sequel to YPD on the cards
After seeing the stupendous response to Yamla Pagla Deewana,Sunny Deol said that a sequel to the film is on the cards. YPD is doing good business, especially in the north. People have gone to the theatres, even though the film is not a Diwali or Christmas release when business shoots up by 40 percent. We will now work on making a sequel to the film, said the actor.

He also added that the response has proved the audiences love for the Deols. They are even calling me the Rajnikanth of the North, which is a huge compliment. Its very encouraging and we will work towards doing more good cinema.
