WR and CR see drop in power consumption due to winter spell

Both the Railway divisions have witnessed a significant drop in electricity bills as commuters prefer to switch off the fans due to the cold spell.

The winter spell in the city has not only brought with it chilly winds but also some respite for Western and Central Railways from inflated electricity bills.

“With the dip in temperature commuters have been switching off the fans in the trains. Also,at our 30 railway stations fans were off for some time. From December 1 to 30 we managed to save over Rs 40 lakh,” WR Chief PRO Sharat Chandrayan said.

During this winter season,WR saw drop in power consumption both in trains and at stations. “From the second week of December,daily power consumption by fans in trains has fallen by 20 megawatts and that at railway stations has fallen by two megawatts,” Chandrayan said.

WR has to pay power bill of around Rs 11 crore every month for running the trains and around Rs 1 crore for the electricity consumed at stations.

Similary,Central Railway (CR) also saw drop in power consumption. “There has been a significant saving in the power bill. It is difficult to put it in figures,” CR PRO A K Jain said.
