Eden Gardens Test turned out to be a real fight to the finish. Shamik Chakrabarty finds out more

It is said that behind every successful man is a woman. Those present at the Eden Gardens on the final day of the second Test between India and South Africa might like to say it in a different way: Behind every good show is a collective will.

It was one of those days when the men in khaki happily forgot their duties during the last few overs and joined the crowd to back India to the hilt. And,believe it or not,no soul complained — yes, such is the passion for cricket in the country.

In the VIP box, former chief minister of West Bengal Siddhartha Shankar Ray was getting restless as tension was building up in the lush green Eden fields. The Cricket Association of Bengal president Jagmohan Dalmiya stood alongside him. He was no less anxious of the outcome as overs went by.

The Test match didn’t draw the tinsel town celebrities in droves. The proceedings in the middle — the fight of Sachin Tendulkar,Virender Sehwag,MS Dhoni and Harbhajan Singh, and the stubbornness of Hashim Amla —- were a lot closer to life than the make-believe world. But an excellent wicket allowed some fantastic cricket.

The 22-yard strip at Eden Gardens was the cynosure of all eyes and the man behind it,Prabir Mukherjee, eventually turned out to be a hero. And the old-timers had their revenge on the upstarts.

After this match think twice before you call Test cricket passé .
