This admission season, students seem to willing to experiment and choose newer subjects in Humanities over the so-called traditional ones.
The two government colleges in Panchkula have noted an interesting trend with subjects like psychology and Bachelors in Mass Communication finding a huge following.
Traditional combinations of political science, history, geography, sociology and physical education, meanwhile, are eternal favourites among students here,a majority of who come from rural areas.
We are through with admissions in the arts subjects. Every section has a strength of about 80 students. Candidates feel apprehensive about choosing subjects they are not familiar with. They come from villages where there is not much awareness about subjects in Humanities which can provide vast opportunities for a career, said Professor R C Goyal, principal,Government College,Sector 1.
Professional courses like psychology, public administration and even mass communication are now being considered lucrative over the tried and tested subjects.
Of the 25 seats in the mass communication course,GC-1 has already filled 19 seats and is hopeful of the remaining too being lapped up. Similarly,in psychology more than 70 per cent of the total 80 seats are filled.
Both psychology and mass communication provide greater career opportunities to students. One can either become a clinical psychologist or take up any stream in the media as well. Though the number is handful, students from rural areas are also becoming more aware, said Professor R S Sanga, principal,Government College for Girls,Sector 14.
