Commenting on the passing of the Gujarat Educational Laws (Amendment) Bill,2010,by the state Assembly on Friday, senior Congress leader and Porbander MLA Arjun Modhwadia said that over the years the state has fallen behind in elementary education.

Modhwadia said that while Gujarat stood at ninth position in 2007-08,it slipped to 13th position in 2008-09. He quoted the figures from the Educational Development Index (EDI) report of the Human Resource Development Ministry prepared after surveying 42,000 primary schools, including 33,182 government-run schools.

Modhwadia added that the enrolment of students in primary classes (Std I to Std VIII) had dropped by over 8 per cent between 2005 and 2008 as per EDI report.
