The state government is yet to initiate any action against Dr Ketan Desai,a professor with the Ahmedabad-based B J Medical College,despite his arrest by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) around one week ago. The CBI has reportedly sent an official communiqué to state Chief Secretary Achal Joti about Dr Desais bribery case on April 27. Dr Desai is also head of the Urology department of the BJMC.
CBI officials said a detailed communiqué regarding Dr Desais arrest for allegedly accepting Rs 2 crore for granting recognition to Gian Sagar Medical College in Punjab is sent to the state chief secretary.
According to state government rules,any government official,who is in police custody for 48 hours is to be suspended by the government. However,Joti refused to comment on the issue and Principal Secretary,Health and Family Welfare Department, Rajesh Kishore said he is yet to receive the CBI communiqué. BJMC Dean Dr Bharat Shah was not available for his comment.
On the other hand,Health department sources said that Dr Desais suspension order would be issued by the states General Administration Department. Responding to a query about the communiqué,Jyoti said,I dont know about this.
CBI officials told The Indian Express,The agency officials will question the members of the Mumbai-based construction company The New India with which Dr Desai was found to be associated. Our team is also trying to find further details about Dr Desais property in Sanand area of Ahmedabad district.
However,CBI refused to comment if other MCI members were associated with this construction company. Meanwhile,three CBI officials who are in the state for investigation in the case might also question Dr Alka Desai,Dr Desais wife and his partner in Ahmedabad-based construction company Zeiss Infrastructure. CBI sleuths are also likely to question the officials of the Sumandeep Vidyapeeth which has been in the news for its deemed-to-be university status.
Documents scrutinised
On Thursday,CBI questioned BJMC Dean Dr Bharat Shah on Dr Desais monthly payroll and the arrested professors past record. Sources said that Shahs interrogation lasted for more than two hours though CBI officials did not confirm the sleuths visit to the college. The documents related to Dr Desai were reportedly scrutinised. Sources said Desai,who did not report to the duty despite being department head at the college,was never served a notice.
