The Samajwadi Party (SP),which supports the Congress-led UPA government from outside,on Friday said it would bring a cut motion over the fertiliser price hike during the discussion on the budget proposals in the next session of Parliament.
The SP condemns the governments move to hike the prices of fertiliser. We will protest against the government inside Parliament and outside as well. In the budget discussions,we will move a cut motion over the fertiliser price hike issue. We will also seek support from other opposition parties and UPA allies Trinamool Congress and
DMK for the cut motion, said SP general secretary and party spokesperson Mohan Singh.
He said his party supported direct subsidy to farmers, which was promised by the government in the past, and it would oppose any other move to restructure fertiliser economy.
With Trinamool and DMK members reportedly protesting against the urea price hike in the Cabinet on Thursday, the SPs move to muster their support for the cut motion over this issue holds significance as it may create an embarrassing situation for the government.
Singh also lamented that Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar did not object to the proposal to hike urea prices. In fact,he alleged that Pawar let it happen as a bargain to infuse Rs 800 crore into Air India, which comes under the Civil Aviation Ministry handled by his party colleague Praful Patel.
Condemning violent Naxalite tactics,Singh said the SP would also protest against Home Minister P Chidambarams unilateral offensive against the Naxals without getting the state governments on board.
