The euphoria over the victory in Presidency College elections vanished today,as the SFI was unable to win even a single seat in the students union elections at Maulana Azad College.
In the elections held today, the Independents Students Federation (ISF) bagged 29 of the 35 seats and the newly set up unit of Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) got the remaining six seats.
The ISF is an independent students union, which is not affiliated to any political party. The elections were held after a decade at the college, which was considered an SFI hotbed. The college had been the nurturing ground for many CPM heavyweights like Md Selim.
The voters were severely threatened and intimidated. The ISF is a breakaway faction of the SFI but they are corrupt and always resort to unfair means, said Madhuja Sen Roy,Kolkata district secretary of SFI.
The SFI could not manage to put up its candidates in all the 35 seats of the college. They could contest 26 seats only.
After the recent win of the SFI at Presidency College, with a margin of nearly 10 seats, the SFI was in high spirits. But this loss is again considered a major setback for the SFI.
We set up the unit of the Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad just a month ago and won six seats. We could have got more seats had our unit been set up early. In the last Assembly elections in the Bowbazar area the CPM candidates deposit was confiscated. The elections at the Maulana Azad College showed that the same trend is continuing even now, said Swanakamal Saha,Trinamool MLA from the area.
