Head Constable Shivram Sharma (50) was in uniform when he stepped out of the RPF barracks in Bandra (East) at 10.50 am,walked to the nearby canteen and fired seven times at Constable Uddal Singh (52),who was having breakfast there. He then calmly laid down his rifle and surrendered,eyewitnesses said.

The first two rounds missed. Of the next five,two rounds hit Singh in the chest and three in the stomach. He died on the spot, said an officer of the Nirmal Nagar police. Sharma was on day duty while Singh had just returned from night duty.

Sharma was arrested by the Nirmal Nagar police and charged with murder. The weapon,which was his service rifle,has been recovered, said DCP (Zone 8) Nisar Tamboli. Sharma will be produced in court on Monday morning.

So far,no motive has come to light. We are still questioning the witnesses who were at the mess when the shooting took place,as well as other colleagues. They are in shock and have not been able to shed much light on the incident or any motive for it, Tamboli said.

Other RPF personnel who were in the barracks said both Sharma and Singh had joined the Bandra barracks after the elections. Their families are in Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh respectively.
