After a driver crashed his car into the bridge at the Children Traffic Park during a driving test and the wall came crumbling down,a litany of similar complaints has come pouring in.
It is an everyday affair. People bang their vehicles in the sidewalls of the bridge, which is so narrow that the learner drivers find it impossible to manoeuvre across it, said a traffic constable at the park.
Residents question the point of having such a bridge. There is no such bridge on the city roads. Why do the police make drivers clear the bridge? It is extremely difficult for new drivers. Even I had collided with the walls on my last test about six months ago, said Kamal Brar. Apparently, the police fail candidates in the driving test if they fail to negotiate the bridge and ask them to reappear for the test after six months. My last experience haunts me. I have to reappear for the test next week. During the last test,I had hit the sidewalls of the bridge and the police officers failed me. The bridge is quite narrow and it is not easy for anyone to drive through, said Shivinder,a resident of Sector 21.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (Traffic) J S Cheema claimed the width of the bridge is appropriate for the test. It was constructed considering the width of most vehicles and to test the drivers road skills in the rush hours. We cant create chaos here,so the bridge tests the concentration of the driver, he added.
