Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Rajnath Singh on Thursday blamed the ruling Samajwadi Party government in Uttar Pradesh for the violence in Muzaffarnagar district, and called for the resignation of Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav and dissolution of government.
He said that it has lost the moral imperative to continue governing the state. The clashes that started on Sunday claimed over 50 lives and left scores of people injured.
As the tension over the affected areas was only just lifting,Rajnath Singh slammed the Akhilesh government by saying that it had at first provoked the conflict to promote its interests with no regard for law and order. According to Singh,SP is only interested to boost its vote-bank.
The BJP had earlier called for President’s rule to be clamped on UP in view of the government’s non-performance especially in the law and order area. It also asked why no FIRs had been lodged against SP leaders who attended ‘banned’ party meeting on 30 August.
A one-man judicial commission, comprising Allahabad High Court judge Vishnu Sahai, has been assigned to probe the communal clashes.
Several leaders, belonging to BJP and Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) were detained by police when they were on their way to the site of the clashes.
