Khanna deflects flak with Net savvy

Congress’ media-savvy MLA Jassi Khangura is proving to be an inspiration for others in the party.

Congress’ media-savvy MLA Jassi Khangura is proving to be an inspiration for others in the party. With his appointment as a general secretary of the newly reconstituted Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) and proximity to PPCC president Capt Amarinder Singh creating resentment within the party’s state unit, former MLA Arvind Khanna is now trying to publicise his good work,a la Khangura.

Khanna today launched the first edition of a monthly e-newsletter highlighting the works of his NGO,Umeed,to showcase its work in rural development, women’s empowerment, social empowerment, education and awareness programmes.

“I welcome my well-wishers and supporters to the first edition of our monthly e-newsletter. From political and social issues that I have been involved in to the activities of our NGO,Umeed, this newsletter will update you on everything that has been happening in our state of Punjab,” it reads.

Notably, the appointment of this former MLA of Sangrur as one of the eight general secretaries and later general secretary attached to PPCC president Capt Amarinder Singh had come under criticism from his partymen as the Central Bureau of Investigation had in February filed a chargesheet against him charging him for committing violations of Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA). In the FIR registered against Khanna in 2007,the CBI had alleged that Khanna,a relative of former Union Minister Natwar Singh, had accepted contributions from nine overseas companies/ trusts based in United Kingdom in his savings bank account in a New Delhi-based foreign bank in contravention of provisions of FCRA

Khanna denies the timing is linked to the opposition to his appointment. “I have been running this NGO for the past 14 years but not many know about it. I liked Jassi Khangura’s idea of e-newsletter that highlights his activities and dairy farm venture.”

As for his appointment in PPCC,Khanna says he was made treasurer in PPCC way back in 1998. After 12 years,if I am made a general secretary, how has it become an issue for dissent? As for the CBI case against me,nowhere has the investigating agency accused me of corruption. It has charged me of violating FCRA by not informing about my receiving money from my NRI dad. To which,I have submitted that informing is not mandatory if the money is a gift from a blood relation,” he added.
