Cyclone alert in Assam,Northeast

Even as cyclone ‘Mahasen’ entered Bangladesh and partially touched the Barak Valley in southern Assam Thursday afternoon,the authorities in different states issued high alert across the Northeast.

Even as cyclone ‘Mahasen’ entered Bangladesh and partially touched the Barak Valley in southern Assam Thursday afternoon,the authorities in different states issued high alert across the Northeast. In Assam,movement of boats,ferries and all other vessels on the Brahmaputra,Barak and other rivers were suspended,while schools were shut for two days in Mizoram.

In Guwahati,State Disaster Management Authority member secretary S C Das said while Mizoram,Tripura and the Barak Valley in southern Assam were expected to come under maximum impact of the cyclone,its velocity was likely to considerably reduce as it entered the Northeast.

Das said the Brahmaputra Valley was more likely to experience moderate rainfall during 36 hours. In Guwahati,authorities have suspended plying of boats and ferries on the Brahmaputra for three days.
