Action against people using pvt helipads on rooftops: BMC

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has directed its officials to take strict action against people using helipads on private terraces in the city.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has directed its officials to take strict action against people using helipads on private terraces in the city. The decision came after some industrialists had put forth a proposal to use helipads on their private rooftops.

Corporators on Thursday said in the Improvements Committee meeting there were three spots in the city where helipads on private terraces or on commercial premises are being used. “The issue of private helipads is in the High Court. There is also a petition against it as such helipads pose noise pollution risks. No private parties can use helipads on terraces before the authorities takes a proper decision in this regard,” said Manoj Kotak, chairman of Improvements Committee of BMC.

“If the permission for the use of helipads on rooftops and even on private grounds is being violated under any circumstance,BMC should give notice to such people and stop its use,” said Kotak.

Following a state directive in 2007,a committee, chaired by the head of Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB),was formed.

The panel includes representatives of the principal secretary of the urban development department, the civic commissioner, the Mumbai Police and the director of the environment department. The committee will take a final decision on all proposed helipads in the city, according to a BMC official.

Meanwhile, the Improvements Committee has also directed the civic body to revise the policy to allot BMC plots in educational institutes for marriages and other functions. Also,a database of the income from leased plots of BMC should be collated and a revised policy should be made for the same.
