THE NOMINATION of former Maharashtra IPS officer Abdur Rahman, who was announced as the Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA) candidate from Dhule, was rejected by the Election Commission on grounds that his resignation from the force has not yet been accepted by the Maharashtra government.
The 1997 batch IPS officer had resigned from the force in 2019 after the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) was passed by the Rajya Sabha. Rahman is likely to approach the High Court.
On Saturday, Rahman tweeted, “I filed my nomination yesterday. Both BJP and Congress parties were scared of the massive public support I was getting on the ground. I have not received any salary for four and a half years. I am not a part of any government department. Still my nomination has been rejected citing the reason of office of profit. I argued myself and also gave a written submission. I was given a pre-typed three page order. I am taking advice from lawyers. I will challenge it in the High Court.”
Rahman’s petition seeking voluntary retirement is already pending in HC after the state Home department did not accept his resignation.
The next date of hearing is May 6. Rahman, an IIT Kanpur alumnus, was to face two-term MP and former Union minister Subhash Bhamre of the BJP in Dhule.
