Khunti Lok Sabha Constituency: The 18th Lok Sabha elections polling in Khunti is scheduled to take place on Monday, May 13, 2024. Khunti is one of the 14 Lok Sabha seats of Jharkhand and covers a total of five Vidhan Sabha constituencies, i.e., Kharsawan, Tamar, Torpa, Khunti, Simdega and Kolebira.
Khunti Lok Sabha, from 1962 to 1984, was dominated by Congress and the Jharkhand Party. However, after 1984, the Bharatiya Janata Party completely dominated the constituency, as they only lost the 2004 elections to Congress since then and have managed to win eight times, cementing their stronghold.
In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Khunti Lok Sabha is reserved for scheduled tribe candidates. BJP has fielded their sitting Member of Parliament and Union Minister Arjun Munda, while Congress has opted for Kali Charan Munda as their representative.
Arjun Munda is one of the Lok Sabha candidates in the 18th General Elections, as he is a two-time MP (2009 and 2019) and also a former Chief Minister of Jharkhand. Munda was also one of the prominent leaders who demanded the separation of Jharkhand from Bihar. He has been a long-time NDA member and an important face of the BJP amongst the tribal people of Jharkhand. This will be his second consecutive Lok Sabha election from Khunti, as he won the 2019 elections by a small margin of just over one thousand votes against the same opponent, i.e., Kali Charan Munda.
Kali Charan Munda, who is the son of one of the most influential tribal leaders from Jharkhand Muchirai Munda, was named as one of the earliest Congress candidates for the 18th Lok Sabha elections. Kali Charan is a former two-time MLA from the Tamar seat and also a respected figure amongst the tribal community in Jharkhand. Congress believes Kali Charan’s influence can play a deciding role in upcoming elections and can also lead them to a victory in this seat after two decades, as even in the 2019 elections, Kali Charan only lost to Arjun Munda by a mere margin of 1445 votes.
