The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced 222 candidates for the elections to the 224-member Karnataka assembly slated to be held on May 10. The results will be declared on May 13. The party needs to cross the halfway mark of 113 in order to form the government in the state.
The ruling party had announced its first list of 189 candidates fielding 52 new faces and eight women candidates. While the BJP has fielded Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai from his traditional Shiggaon seat, former CM B S Yediyurappa’s son B Y Vijayendra will be contesting from his father’s Shikaripura constituency. BJP national general secretary C T Ravi will contest from Chikkmagaluru seat and state minister R Ashoka will contest against state Congress chief D K Shivakumar in Kanakapura. Karnataka Housing Minister V Somanna will contest against former CM Siddaramaiah in Varuna constituency.
The second list has 23 candidates with new candidates replacing seven sitting MLAs. Only four sitting MLAs were granted tickets. Former chief minister and six-term MLA Jagadish Shettar did not find a place in the list and he later joined the Congress party. Several of the rejected MLAs were in the age group of 70 years, and some have been linked with corruption cases. Two women candidates also featured in the second list.
The BJP named 10 candidates in the third list dropping two sitting MLAs and retaining two sitting MLAs. The party also substituted a three-time MLA Aravind Limbavali with his wife Manjula Aravind Limbavalli as the candidate from Mahadevapura constituency in Bengaluru’s IT corridor. Limbavali has been at the center of many controversies in recent times including misbehavior with supporters. The seat is reserved for Scheduled Caste candidates. Jagadish Shettar was replaced with a local Hubli BJP leader, Mahesh Tenginakai, in the Hubbali Dharwad (Central) seat. Candidates for Manvi and Shivamogga City are yet to be announced.
