Party workers have to toil hard to break Congress’s 1984 record of winning the highest seats in Lok Sabha elections, Gujarat BJP president C R Paatil said in Ahmedabad Friday.

“In 1984, because of the benefit of the atmosphere created after the assassination of Indira Gandhi, Congress could win 403 seats (in the Lok Sabha). This time, we have to break this record. I have confidence that you can do it. The only requirement is that of following up the system I have created,” Paatil said as he addressed a booth-level convention at Sabarmati Riverfront.

Paatil has set a target of winning all 26 Lok Sabha seats of Gujarat by a margin of over five lakh votes.

In reference to his recent statement that he did not have a magic wand to win the elections, Paatil said, “Our confidence is high. But if the workers rely on the party president thinking that he has a magic wand and they do not need to do anything and the lead will be secured, then won’t it cause damage? So, do I need to clarify that whatever magic wand is there, it is in your (party workers’) hands?” Paatil said.

He also asked party workers to ensure not to repeat the mistakes committed in the 2022 Assembly elections when the BJP lost 26 seats by small margins.

Crediting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s popularity for getting a record 156 seats in the 2022 Assembly elections, Paatil said people voted for BJP candidates with a spirit of making PM Modi victorious while keeping aside their personal likes or dislikes about the candidates.
