Heavy rains have triggered devastating floods in Yemen, killing at least 30 people and displacing hundreds more, officials said Wednesday. The southern city of Hodeidah has been particularly hard hit, with 500 homes flooded and five people missing, according to Hodeidah Governor Mugammad Qahim.

The ongoing rainy season, which typically intensifies in July and August, has caused widespread damage across the country. The southwestern city of Taiz and the northwestern city of Hajjah have also experienced severe flooding.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported that 15 people were killed in the Maqbnah district of Taiz on Friday, with significant damage to homes, infrastructure, and agricultural land.

Residents in the Tihamah coastal plain, part of Hodeidah, have described the situation as catastrophic. Many homes, often constructed from mud and brick, have been destroyed, leaving families without shelter. Livestock and food supplies have also been lost.

The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) estimates that over 28,000 people in four districts of Hajjah have been affected by the floods. Response teams are providing emergency relief to around 4,112 families in need.

Yemen’s ongoing civil war, which began in 2014, has created a humanitarian crisis. The conflict has weakened infrastructure and displaced millions of people, making the country particularly vulnerable to natural disasters.
