After years of controversies surrounding him, Britain’s Prince Andrew has formally stepped back from his remaining royal titles, including Duke of York and Knight of the Garter. He also relinquished the lesser titles of Earl of Inverness and Baron Killyleagh, as well as the use of “Andrew Inverness” in business dealings, BBC reported.

While Andrew continues to “vigorously deny the accusations” against him, royal insiders say this voluntary step reflects months of mounting pressure from Buckingham Palace and external scrutiny.

The decision comes after a series of events that intensified scrutiny on Andrew. Concerns over his links to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, unresolved questions about his finances, and alleged connections to a Chinese spy had long made him a source of “constant parade of headlines,” a Buckingham Palace source told BBC.

Sources also say the announcement was accelerated by the upcoming historic state visit of the King and Queen to the Vatican.

Epstein emails

The immediate trigger appears to have been the circulation of an email revealing Andrew maintained contact with Epstein longer than he admitted in his 2019 BBC interview. BBC describes this as a moment where “fault lines” in his account became undeniable.

This revelation followed the posthumous memoir of Epstein victim Virginia Giuffre, who had settled a civil case with Andrew earlier this year. The book reportedly portrays Andrew as “entitled,” similar to prior critical biographies.

Royal insiders say, according to the BBC, that the combination of these revelations created a sense that Andrew’s public position was no longer sustainable.

Experts cited by BBC say that by relinquishing his titles voluntarily, Andrew avoided the more humiliating route of Parliament intervening to strip him of his Duke of York title. This approach allowed him to retain a measure of control over the narrative while still acknowledging the pressure surrounding him.

Meanwhile, Andrew’s ex-wife Sarah Ferguson remains without the Duchess of York title, aligning their public profiles. Their daughters continue to hold princess titles. Andrew also maintains residence at Royal Lodge under his own financial arrangements.
