Japan's new Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi speaks during a press conference at the prime minister's office in Tokyo. (AP) Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said Tuesday that US President Donald Trump dialled her shortly after his call with Chinese leader Xi Jinping, the Associated Press (AP) reported.
Takaichi told reporters that Trump expressed his support during their conversation. “President Trump told me that he and I are extremely good friends and that I should call him any time,” she said at her office in Tokyo. She did not say whether they discussed her recent comment about Taiwan, which angered Beijing.
Takaichi, Japan’s first female prime minister, provoked China earlier this month when she said Japan could consider a military response if China moved to take Taiwan.
She said a Chinese attack could create “a survival-threatening situation” for Japan. China’s foreign minister Wang Yi said she had “crossed a red line” and warned that Beijing would “resolutely respond.”
China has since cancelled official and private exchanges and advised its citizens not to travel to Japan.
Takaichi said Trump told her about his overnight phone call with Xi and the state of US-China relations. She said they also discussed the Japan–US alliance and developments in the Indo-Pacific region.

“We confirmed the close coordination between Japan and the United States,” she said.
She declined to share further details, citing diplomatic protocol.
Japan has refused to retract Takaichi’s earlier Taiwan comment, stressing that its position in favour of a peaceful resolution has not changed.
The United States officially takes no stance on Taiwan’s sovereignty but opposes the use of force. Trump has kept strategic ambiguity about whether US forces would intervene in a conflict.
China said Trump told Xi the US “understands how important the Taiwan question is to China.” Trump has not made public comments about Taiwan.
The tension between Japan and China has now reached the United Nations, with both countries accusing each other of making “erroneous” claims.
