A 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar on Friday, according to monitoring services, with tremors felt in nearby countries, including Thailand and Vietnam.
In Bangkok, a high-rise building collapsed as a result of the quake, causing hundreds to flee buildings and gather on the streets.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the earthquake’s epicenter was approximately 17.2 km from Mandalay, a city with a population of about 1.2 million. The quake occurred at a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles), the USGS added.
The midday temblor was followed by a strong 6.4 magnitude aftershock.
While the situation in Bangkok remains serious, no state of emergency has been declared in the Thai capital, confirmed Deputy Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul.
