As the Russia-Ukraine war completes its third year, Kyiv proposed a European-backed UN resolution demanding an immediate withdrawal of Russian forces from Ukraine, however, the United States has reportedly asked Ukraine to withdraw its resolution as America submitted its own resolution.
It has widened the diplomatic rift between US President Donald Trump’s administration and Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the clash has pit US-Russia on one side while the Europe and Ukraine on the other, which is the most dramatic display of trans-Atlantic tension, reported Wall Street Journal (WSJ).
According to a note reviewed by WSJ, the US diplomats conveyed their reservation regarding the resolution being brought by Ukraine in the United Nations for a complete withdrawal of Russian forces from its territory.
The American diplomats said that they would oppose the Ukrainian resolution if it advances and urged the European counterparts to convince Kyiv to withdraw it.
As per the European diplomats, their American counterparts were working on the Ukraine draft and suggesting minor changes until earlier. But by Friday, Washington asked Kyiv to withdraw its resolution but the Zelenskyy led administration refused.
Since Ukraine refused to pull its draft resolution, the United Nations General Assembly is poised to vote on it on February 24, the third anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, two European diplomats said, reported AP.
The UN General Assembly, which consists of 193 nations, will then vote on the US resolution regarding the Russia-Ukraine conflict on Monday. The Trump administration is also seeking a vote on its resolution in the UN Security Council, which is being headed by China for this month.
China has scheduled a vote on the US resolution for Monday afternoon in the UN Security Council.
