The White House said on Friday that next month’s inflation data is unlikely to be released because the US government remains shut down, news agency Reuters reported.

In a message posted on its official account, the White House said: “Surveyors cannot deploy to the field – depriving us of critical data.” It also warned that “the economic consequences could be devastating,” according to Reuters.

The shutdown entered its 24th day on Friday after Congress failed to agree on temporary funding. Around 700,000 federal workers have been sent home without pay and a similar number are still working but will not receive paychecks for now. Many households may have to delay spending.

The Consumer Price Index report for September was issued on Friday despite the wider halt to economic data. Reuters said it was released so the Social Security Administration can work out cost-of-living increases for millions of people receiving benefits in 2026. The report had originally been planned for release on 15 October.
