Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said that his military is advancing further into Russia’s Kursk region after attacking it last week.
Giving a surprise to the Russian administration, the Ukrainian forces bombarded the Kursk region last week and have been advancing through it.
This sudden attack has changed the mood of the war which began in February 2022 when Russia invaded Ukraine.
Kyiv has said that the territory of Kursk will act as a buffer zone for Ukraine to protect its border areas from Russian offensive.
President Zelenskyy provided an update regarding the Ukrainians fighting in Kursk and posted on Telegram, “We continue to advance further in the Kursk region, from one to two km in various areas since the start of the day.”
Zelenskyy also said that they were holding over 100 Russian prisoners of war in the same period when they attacked the Kursk region.
Ukraine’s Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko said the creation of a “buffer zone was designed to protect our border communities from daily enemy attacks,” as reported by Reuters.
The Kremlin has said that Ukraine is trying to get a good deal in hand by attacking and taking control of a part of Kursk region when both the countries are on the table for negotiations and a possible ceasefire to the war.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has vowed to oust the Ukrainian forces from the Kursk region, who he says have been backed by the West in the attack, but it’s been more than a week since Ukraine invaded Kursk but the Russians haven’t been successful.
“The situation remains difficult,” said Yuri Podolyaka, a pro-Russian military blogger, further adding that “The enemy still has the initiative, and so, albeit slowly, it is increasing its presence in the Kursk region,” as quoted by Reuters.
