Two Ohio children — a 9-year-old boy and a 10-year-old girl — have been charged with rape and attempted murder in connection with a brutal attack on a 5-year-old girl in Cleveland, authorities announced Wednesday.
According to the Cuyahoga County prosecutor’s office, the pair face multiple counts, including attempted murder, four counts of rape, two counts of felonious assault, strangulation, and kidnapping, over the incident that took place last month in a Cleveland field, The New York Times reported.
The victim’s mother, in a Facebook post earlier this month, described her daughter’s severe injuries, saying the 5-year-old was found “unresponsive, bloody with her hair pulled from her scalp” and “covered in bruises.” “My daughter did not look like herself,” she wrote, NYT reported.
The attack reportedly occurred on September 13, when the young girl left a relative’s home while her mother was undergoing a medical procedure. She was later found injured and being treated by emergency responders. The child’s current condition has not been disclosed.
Cleveland police said they began investigating the case the same day, involving “multiple children under the age of 10, both as victims and as suspects.” The department declined further comment, citing privacy concerns and the ongoing nature of the investigation, the NYT report added.
According to the report, prosecutors said the case remains under active review as more evidence is gathered. The two accused children will be arraigned in juvenile court at a later date.
Officials clarified that, under Ohio law, only juveniles aged 14 or older are eligible for their cases to be transferred to adult court.
