President Donald Trump speaks with reporters during a meeting with Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orban in the Cabinet Room of the White House. (AP) US President Donald Trump on Saturday proposed that money currently paid to insurance companies under the Affordable Care Act should be given directly to Americans, Reuters reported.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump wrote: “I am recommending to Senate Republicans that the hundreds of billions of dollars currently being sent to money-sucking insurance companies in order to save the bad healthcare provided by Obamacare BE SENT DIRECTLY TO THE PEOPLE so that they can purchase their own, much better, healthcare, and have money left over.”
He added: “In other words, take from the big, bad insurance companies, give it to the people, and terminate, per dollar spent, the worst healthcare anywhere in the world, Obamacare. Unrelated, we must still terminate the filibuster!”
Trump did not give further details on how the proposal would be implemented or whether it would need new legislation, as per a Reuters report.
The comments come as Republicans and Democrats remain at odds over the federal government shutdown, which has entered another week without a deal to fund government operations.
Trump’s post appeared to be an attempt to find common ground within his party while also pressing Republicans in the Senate to act on healthcare reform.
