US President Donald Trump signed the stopgap funding bill on Wednesday night to end the 43 days long government shutdown after both the houses of the Congress cleared the stalemate over government funding.

The House of Representatives passed the GOP-backed bill with a 222-209 vote in favour and extended the government funding until January. The shutdown saw thousands of federal workers go without paychecks and layoffs, furloughs, while travellers stranded at the airport due to air traffic controller shortages and people lining up at food banks to get a meal for their families among others.

The House lawmakers returned to the Congress after nearly eight weeks as Republicans managed to use their slight majority in the lower chamber to get the bill passed, though six Democratic lawmakers also voted in favour of the GOP bill to end the federal shutdown. Earlier on Monday, the Senate had passed the spending bill paving way for reopening the government.

In the Senate, Republicans needed at least 60 votes to get the bill going and make way for reopening the federal shutdown but their votes stood at 52. However, eight Democratic Senators pulled away from the party line and voted in favour of the GOP bill that would run the government until January. The decision angered many in the Democratic caucus yet the legislation cleared the logjam, stuck his past six weeks.
