(AP) US President Donald Trump met Japan’s Emperor Naruhito in Tokyo on Monday in a grand welcome, marking the start of a high-stakes visit that will include his first talks with newly appointed Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, the country’s first woman leader.
The two leaders are expected to focus on trade and the future of the US–Japan alliance as Trump pursues a push to reshape economic ties across Asia. He said he had heard “phenomenal things” about Takaichi and praised her ties to former prime minister Shinzo Abe, saying that “really helps Japan and the United States,” according to the Associated Press (AP).
Trade remains the focus of Trump’s visit to the region. The US president is pushing his “America First” approach, aiming to reshape global trade rules to favour American workers and businesses.
Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping are expected to meet later this week in South Korea. Trump has said he believes the two sides can agree on a deal to ease tensions between the world’s largest economies. “I think we’re going to come away with a deal,” he said, as reported by AP.
Japan is a key partner for the United States in both trade and security in Asia. Trump said he planned to highlight the “great friendship” between the two countries during talks in Tokyo, AP reported.

Security issues including tensions in the South China Sea and concerns over North Korea are expected to be discussed, though US officials say the top priority for now remains trade.
Takaichi’s coalition has a narrow majority and analysts say foreign policy will be key as she works to build support at home. She stepped into office after her party moved quickly to form a government.
Her meeting with Trump comes as Japan has tightened security in the capital. Tokyo police have deployed thousands of officers and stepped up checks around the US Embassy and at Haneda Airport, according to AP.
