Sensitive talks between US and Chinese officials regarding tariff war in Geneva ended with prolonged negotiations and the talks would resume on Sunday as US President Donald Trump hailed the interaction with the Chinese delegation, saying the two sides had negotiated “a total reset…in a friendly, but constructive, manner.”
Trump said that a “reset” of trade between the two countries was being discussed as the world focused on the outcome of the bilateral negotiations, since the talks have power to upend the global economy.
Trump, in a post on his Truth Social platform stated, “A very good meeting today with China, in Switzerland. Many things discussed, much agreed to.”
Without elaborating on the progress made, Trump added, “We want to see, for the good of both China and the U.S., an opening up of China to American business. GREAT PROGRESS MADE!!!”
During the meeting in Geneva, the US delegation being led by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer met Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng for about 10 hours on Saturday, as it marked the first meeting between the two nations after imposing over 100% tariff on each other’s goods.
As the talks ended on day one in Switzerland, neither side issued any statement regarding the substance of discussion nor provided any details of progress made to reduce levies on goods, wherein the US has imposed a 145% tariff on Chinese products and China has levied a 125% tariff on US goods.
The meeting between US and Chinese delegations comes at a time when President Trump’s tactics of reciprocal tariffs led to destabilization of global markets and brought about $ 600 billion in annual bilateral trade between US and China to a standstill.
Even before the talks began on Saturday, Trump had indicated lowering the tariffs in a Truth Social post stating “80% Tariff seems right! Up to Scott.″
