A student from Telangana lost his life after being shot by assailants at a petrol station in the United States, his family confirmed on Saturday, while Consulate General of India in Chicago called for immediate action against those responsible for the killing.
Sai Teja Nukarapu (22), hailing from Khammam district in Telangana was fatally attacked at the station near Chicago during the early hours of Saturday, Indian time, according to BRS MLC Madhusudan Thatha, who shared preliminary details received from the US.
“We are shocked and deeply sad at the murder of Indian Student Nukarapu Sai Teja. We demand immediate action against the culprits. Consulate will extend all possible help to the family and friends of the victim,” the Consulate General of India in Chicago posted on X.
The MLC, who visited Sai Teja’s parents at their residence near Khammam, stated that Sai Teja was not on duty at the time but had stayed to assist a friend who had asked him to cover for a short while. The friend had briefly stepped out for an errand.
Sai Teja, who had completed a BBA in India, was pursuing an MBA in the US. A relative of the victim told reporters that Sai Teja had been working part-time. “It is heart-breaking to learn that he was shot while helping a friend,” the relative said.
The MLC mentioned that he had reached out to the Telugu Association of North America (TANA) to seek assistance in the matter. Sai Teja’s body is expected to be repatriated to India next week.
