A student at Evergreen High School near Denver, Colorado, opened fire on Wednesday, injuring two classmates, and later died from self-inflicted injuries, Reuters reported, citing authorities.
Jacki Kelley, spokesperson for the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, said three students were hospitalised with gunshot wounds, including the shooter. The sheriff’s office later confirmed on social media that the suspected shooter had died on Wednesday evening.
The shooter used a handgun to carry out the gunfire that broke out both inside and outside the at the high school campus around 12.24 pm. Dr Brian Blackwood, head of trauma at CommonSpirit St Anthony Hospital, said one student remains in critical condition while another’s injuries are non-life-threatening.
According to The Independent, a fourth person was also rushed to the hospital, though it’s still unclear if the injury happened on school property. The suspected shooter, whose identity has not been revealed, was a student at the school. Investigators plan to search the suspect’s home, car, and locker for more evidence to learn about him and his motive.
Taking to X, FBI Director Kash Patel wrote: “We’re aware of the tragic situation unfolding near Denver. The FBI is on scene and in full support of local authorities to ensure everyone’s safety.”
Hundreds of law enforcement officers swarmed the scene after a 911 call at 12.24 pm local time, including West Metro Fire Rescue and the ATF. The school reportedly had a capacity of 900 students. The FBI confirmed it was on site, helping out local authorities. “We are still trying to determine where our crime scenes are and if we have crime scenes within the school,” Jacki Kelley said in a statement.
The campus was locked down immediately with officers circling the area. A reunification centre was set up at Bergen Meadow Elementary School. “This is the scariest thing you could ever think could happen,” Kelley said, adding, “Police and fire just show up. When you hear the words ‘active shooter’ and you know kids are involved, you’re coming.”
Colorado Governor Jared Polis said on X that he’s keeping a close watch on the Evergreen High School shooting and getting constant updates. He mentioned that State Troopers are already helping local police. “Students should be able to attend school safely and without fear across our state and nation. We are all praying for the victims and the entire community.”
Minutes later, Jeffco Public Schools sent a letter to children and parents, shared by FOX31, stating: “Our school has been placed on a lockdown due to police activity in the area. Please remain out of the area. We will update you as soon as we learn more.”
