German police have shot and killed a man following an exchange of gunfire near the Israeli consulate and a museum dedicated to Nazi history in Munich. The incident occurred on Thursday and was confirmed by state Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann.

According to Herrmann, the suspect was armed with a long-barrelled gun. A Munich police spokesperson added that police intervention resulted in the suspect being stopped, and it is believed that he died at the scene.

The Munich police reported on X that there were no indications of additional suspects or incidents elsewhere in the Bavarian state capital. The exchange of fire took place on the anniversary of the 1972 Munich Olympics attack, during which Palestinian Black September militants killed 11 Israeli athletes.

The Israeli Foreign Ministry confirmed that the consulate was closed for the commemoration of the Munich Olympics massacre and that no consulate staff were harmed during the incident.

German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser labeled the event as a serious incident but refrained from speculating on the specific circumstances or motives behind it. Faeser emphasized that the protection of Israeli facilities remains a top priority for German authorities.

The nearby museum and research institute, which focuses on Germany’s 1933-45 Nazi regime, is situated in Munich’s Maxvorstadt neighborhood, close to the Israeli consulate.

Earlier in the day, police had reported a significant operation in response to the incident and advised the public to avoid the area. A helicopter was deployed to provide an aerial view of the situation as part of the ongoing response efforts.
