A police officer was fatally shot on Monday in a North Carolina supermarket as he was responding to reports of a man with a gun inside the mart, the authorities said.

Police said a suspect was later taken into custody and announced the death of Greensboro police officer Michael Horan, in a press conference adding that Horan was responding to the reports of a gunman when he was shot in the afternoon at a Food Lion store in Greensboro.

Ramona Miller, who was shopping in the mart with her six year old granddaughter, said that she heard shots being fired.

“We were on our way out and I was purchasing a lottery ticket and I was just sitting there and heard a ‘pop-pop’ and then ‘pop-pop-pop.’ I think I heard five shots. At first I didn’t know it was a shooting…but an employee yelled out, ‘Shooting! Shooting!’” Miller said, as quoted by Associated Press.
