Ambassador of India to France, Jawed Ashraf, praised the launch of the UPI and expressed his contentment towards the efforts being made to make UPI global. (X/@IndiaembFrance)In a major achievement for India’s digital advancement, the Unified Payments Interface aka UPI was launched in the world-renowned flagship store Galeries Lafayette in Haussman, Paris.
It was in January 2024 that UPI based payment method was launched at the Eiffel Tower. The step is being seen as an extension of PM Narendra Modi led government’s vision to globalise the UPI revolution.
It means whether you are in India, visiting the iconic wonder Eiffel Tower or shopping at Galeries Lafayette, one can use the UPI directly to make the payments.
The Indian Embassy in France tweeted the pictures of the launch of UPI in Paris on social media on Thursday and said that “Ambassador Jawed Ashraf was delighted to launch UPI in the world famous Galeries Lafayette in Paris. After the launch in Eiffel Tower in January 2024, expanding UPI across France.”
India has launched UPI services in Paris’ world renowned store just ahead of Paris Olympics.
The embassy further recalled PM Modi’s vision towards globalising the UPI technology and said, “A journey that PM Narendra Modi began in 2018 with UPI in Singapore takes another step forward.”
Notably, ahead of the Paris Olympics 2024 which is scheduled to begin from July 26, the launch of UPI could boost the payment metrics and will act as an easy method for the Indians and NRIs who are already acquainted with the innovation.

Ashraf further told PTI that “UPI would grow as a medium of cross-border remittances and eventually become the digital payment system in countries across the world.”
