OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s sister Annie Altman, in a recent lawsuit, has accused her brother of sexually abusing her as a child, between the years 1997 and 2006. The lawsuit filed by Annie in the US District Court in the Eastern District of Missouri alleges that the OpenAI CEO, at the age of 12, started sexually abusing his sister when she was just three years old.
The lawsuit claims that Sam Altman abused his sister “several times a week” when she was a toddler, beginning from oral sex and later involving penetration, reported CNBC. The filings further claim that Annie suffers from “severe depression, mental anguish, and emotional distress which is expected to continue in the future” because of the sexual abuse.
Annie Altman, through the lawsuit, is requesting a jury trial against Sam and damages in excess of $75,000. While she had earlier made claims of sexual abuse against her brother on social media platforms, this is the first time that the younger Altman sibling has taken to court.
In a joint statement with his mother Connie and brothers Max and Jack, Sam Altman denied the allegations posed against him by his sister.
The statement, posted on Sam Altman’s social media accounts, reads, “Annie has made deeply hurtful and entirely untrue claims about our family, and especially Sam. We’ve chosen not to respond publicly, out of respect for her privacy and our own. However, she has now taken legal action against Sam, and we feel we have no choice but to address this.”

The Altman family said that Annie faces “mental health challenges” and “refuses conventional treatment” for the same. It said that Annie receives monthly financial support from the CEO and his family, but continues to demand more money.
The family said that they will “continue to support Annie” in hopes that she finds “stability and peace.”
However, this is not the first time that Sam Altman is facing a lawsuit. In March 2024, Tesla CEO Elon Musk filed a lawsuit against the OpenAI CEO, alleging breach of contract and fiduciary. Musk was one of the co-founders of OpenAI but left the company in 2018, stepping down from his position on the board, after he criticised Altman of abandoning the AI startup’s initial mission.
