Nepal floods: Death toll reaches 193, rescue ops stepped up

The death toll from floods and landslides triggered by heavy rainfall in Nepal rose to 193 on Monday, with recovery and rescue operations being stepped up. At least 30 people remain missing, while 194 others have been injured across the country.

At least 34 people lost their lives in Kathmandu, which was one of the worst affected cities. The southern part of the city was however returning to normalcy on Monday, as water levels began to recede.

Several roads in the country sustained severe damage, while all routes leading to the capital city of Kathmandu are still blocked, news agency PTI reported, citing The Kathmandu Post.

Nepal Home Ministry Spokesperson Rishiram Tiwari said efforts are underway to clear the highways obstructed due to landslides, to resume transportation.

Prime Minister Khadga Prasad Oli, who returned after attending the UN General Assembly meeting, called an emergency meeting upon his arrival on Monday.

Nepal Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak announced the construction of temporary shelters for the displaced, as well as financial assistance for the families of the deceased and the injured. The government also announced the closure of schools for the next three days.
