Aasman Lama, a farmer, had to borrow Rs 6,600 from his neighbours and relatives to organise a cremation for his daughter Salina (22). “I was talking to her on phone when the earthquake hit. I can still hear her cries. She said bhookamp (earthquake) and there was a loud thud. I still cannot forget that sound. While we were talking, she tried to escape with her two-month-old daughter in her arms. She couldn’t make it,” said Lama.

Another resident Shiva says, “We were handed over the dead bodies at the hospital and asked to cremate on our own. Nobody understands that we have lost everything. Where do we get the money? We still managed by borrowing from acquaintances and neighbours to give them a decent exit from this world.”

Cremation is taking place at three places in Kathmandu. One of them is Indrayani Khadgi Shamshan Ghat near Sobha Bhagwati bridge. Ram Bahadur, one of the priests at the cremation ground, said: “Since Saturday, we have cremated over 25 bodies but most people who are coming here don’t know how to pay. The logs have become expensive due to shortage. We can only request the shopkeeper to waive off the amount.”
