Area around Big Ben in London closed as man with Palestinian flag climbs Elizabeth Tower

A man waving a Palestinian flag climbed the Big Ben tower at London’s Palace of Westminster early on Saturday, reportedly shouting “Free Palestine”, the local media reported.

Photos show the barefoot man standing on a ledge several metre up Elizabeth Tower, which houses Big Ben.

The Metropolitan Police said they were alerted about the incident at the Elizabeth Tower at 07:24 GMT.

“Officers are at the scene working to bring the incident to a safe conclusion. They are being assisted by the London Fire Brigade and the London Ambulance Service,” a police spokesperson said, news agency Reuters reported.

Authorities have not yet confirmed the man’s identity or his motives.
