Israel-Gaza Conflict: At least five journalists have been killed in an Israeli strike near Gaza City’s Al-Shifa Hospital, broadcaster Al Jazeera has claimed. The Israeli military acknowledged the attack and said it had targeted and killed a Hamas cell leader posing as an Al Jazeera journalist, Anas al-Sharif, on Sunday.
According to the Qatari broadcaster, journalists Anas al-Sharif and Mohammed Qreiqeh and cameraperson Ibrahim Zaher, Mohammed Noufal and Moamen Aliwa were in a tent for journalists at Al-Shifa hospital’s main gate when the Israeli strikes targeted the area and killed all five of them.
Two weeks ago, Al Jazeera had condemned the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) for a “campaign of incitement” against its reporters in Gaza, including the deceased Anas al-Sharif. After the strikes, IDF confirmed that it targeted and killed al-Sharif as it posted on Telegram that he had “served as the head of a terrorist cell in Hamas”, BBC reported.

Citing intelligence and documents found in Gaza, the Israeli military in a statement said, “Anas Al Sharif served as the head of a terrorist cell in the Hamas terrorist organization and was responsible for advancing rocket attacks against Israeli civilians and IDF (Israeli) troops.”
However, the IDF mentioned that it killed one journalist Anas al-Sharif who belonged to Al Jazeera but the broadcaster has claimed that four journalists and an assistant were killed in the strike.
In July, Al Jazeera had issued a statement criticising “relentless efforts” by the IDF for an “ongoing campaign of incitement targeting Al Jazeera’s correspondents and journalists in the Gaza Strip”.
The militant group Hamas has said that the killing of journalists could signal the start of the Israeli offensive, as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said to take over Gaza City amid heavy criticism. Palestinian journalists’ groups denounced the killing of journalists in Gaza in targeted Israeli strikes.
