US Vice President JD Vance has called out people celebrating the killing of right-wing activist and conservative influencer Charlie Kirk and said they must be held accountable, while guest-hosting an episode of Charlie Kirk’s radio show and stating that he is “desperate” for national unity after the killing of Kirk but finding a common ground with people who celebrated Kirk’s killing is impossible.

The Republican vice president, while guest-hosting “The Charlie Kirk Show” from his ceremonial office in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, said “Call them out, and hell, call their employer. We don’t believe in political violence, but we do believe in civility.”

Among the list of people who have been suspended or terminated over their social media posts that were deemed inappropriate about Kirk’s death include medical professionals, teachers, pilots and one Secret Service employee. However, critics have said that sacking threatens free speech and employee protections, though US companies have moved ahead with the firings.

Vance appeared in a radio talk-show that Kirk hosted as a daily podcast until he was shot dead in the neck while hosting a debate at Utah Valley University on Wednesday. Vance transported Kirk’s body from Utah to Arizona in Air Force Two last week.

The vice president opened the radio show by saying he was “filling in for somebody who cannot be filled in for, but I’ll do my best.” Vance said left-wing Americans “are much likelier to defend and celebrate political violence” adding that “there is no civility in the celebration of political assassination”.

Vance’s remarks for calling out those who celebrate Kirk’s death resonated with other Republican leaders who also called for punishment for those celebrating the 31-year-old activist’s killing.

In his closing remarks, Vance said, “I’m desperate for our country to be united in condemnation of the actions and the ideas that killed my friend. I want it so badly…We can only have it with people who acknowledge that political violence is unacceptable.”
