At least 14 Palestinians were killed in Israeli airstrikes overnight and into Sunday across the Gaza Strip, according to local health officials. The victims include a woman and her two children, who died after a tent sheltering them was hit in Deir al-Balah in central Gaza.
Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital said the tent was housing people displaced by the ongoing war. Another family member was also killed in the strike.
A strike in Jabaliya, in northern Gaza, killed five more people, including two women and a child, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry. Local hospitals said five additional people died in other strikes across the territory.
There was no immediate comment from the Israeli military on the latest attacks. Israel has said that it tries to avoid harming civilians and blames the presence of Hamas fighters in densely populated areas for civilian deaths.
Israel renewed its military offensive in March after a ceasefire collapsed. The campaign began following the Hamas-led attack on Israel on October 7, 2023,
Which killed around 1,200 people, mostly civilians. Militants also took 251 people hostage. Israel says Hamas is still holding 58 of them, and that about a third of those are believed to be alive.
The Gaza Health Ministry says that more than 53,000 Palestinians have been killed during the 19-month Israeli military campaign. The ministry does not separate civilian and combatant deaths but says most of those killed are women and children.
The war has damaged large areas of Gaza and forced about 90 per cent of its 2 million people from their homes.
According to AP, Israel has blocked the entry of food, medicine, and fuel into Gaza for two and a half months. A small amount of aid began to enter again last week.
Israel has said it wants to take full control of Gaza and promote what it calls the “voluntary migration” of Palestinians from the territory. The plan has been rejected by Palestinians and criticised by many governments and experts. According to AP, experts have said such a move could violate international law.
On Sunday, the Israeli military said it intercepted a missile fired by Yemen’s Houthi rebels. The missile triggered air raid sirens in Jerusalem and other areas. No injuries or damage were reported.
The Houthis, who are supported by Iran, have launched several missile attacks toward Israel and at commercial ships in the Red Sea. They have said the attacks are in response to Israel’s military actions in Gaza. Most of the ships they targeted had no direct link to Israel.
Earlier this month, the United States stopped its airstrikes against the Houthis, saying the rebels had agreed to stop attacking commercial vessels. However, that ceasefire did not apply to attacks on Israel, according to AP.
