Israel Air Strike Lebanon Latest News Live: An Israeli strike hit Lebanon’s northern city of Tripoli for the first time early on Saturday, a Lebanese security source was quoted as saying by news agency Reuters. This comes after bombardment hit Beirut’s suburbs and Hezbollah claimed Israeli troops were trying to infiltrate the Lebanese southern town of Odaisseh. Meanwhile, the fate of Hashem Safieddin, the potential successor to slain Hezbollah chief Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah who was targeted in the previous Beirut strikes is still unclear. Amid reports of possible Israeli attacks on Iran’s oil facilities, Iran’s Oil Minister Mohsen Paknejad said on Saturday that he is “not worried” about the escalating regional conflict.

What’s the situation? Iran’s foreign minister Abbas Araghchi on Friday warned that if Israel “takes any step or measure against us, our retaliation will be stronger than the previous one.” The Israeli military estimates it has killed around 250 Hezbollah fighters since the start of its ground operation in Lebanon earlier this week. More than 2,000 people have been killed and over 9,000 wounded in Lebanon in almost a year of cross-border fighting, with most of the deaths occurring in the past two weeks.

How India is responding to the conflict?  India has high stakes in the West Asian region and has voiced concerns over Iran and Israel being on the brink of an all-out war. Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security on Thursday to discuss the outbreak of fresh hostilities, news agency PTI said quoting sources. Earlier, the Ministry of External Affairs said: “It is important that the conflict doesn’t take a wider regional dimension and we urge that all issues be addressed through dialogue and diplomacy.”

Benjamin Netanyahu criticised French President Emmanuel Macron on Saturday, calling him a “disgrace” for urging a halt to arms deliveries to Israel.

The Israeli prime minister stated that Israel is battling “the enemies of civilization,” and emphasised that the country is fighting against forces of barbarism, led by Iran.

Netanyahu expressed his dismay at Macron and other western leaders who are advocating for an arms embargo on Israel, saying, “As Israel confronts these threats, all civilized nations should stand by Israel. Shame on them for calling for an embargo.”

An Expert Explains: Why has Israel invaded Lebanon — and what to make of the war so far

Early on October 1, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) launched “limited, localized, targeted ground raids” against Hezbollah infrastructure in South Lebanon. Many of the personnel involved in the raid were incrementally re-deployed from Gaza to the Israel-Lebanon border over this year.

Since then, Israel has expanded its operation, repeatedly bombing the capital Beirut, and targeting a possible successor to Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of Hezbollah who was killed last week. Lebanon’s Health Ministry said on Saturday morning that more than 2,000 people have died in Israeli attacks across the country.

Hours after the IDF began its offensive, Iran fired a barrage of ballistic missiles at Israel. As Israel considers its response to Iran, the Lebanon gambit is crucial for its strategic interests.

Israel Iran War News Live: Who is Hashem Safieddine, Hezbollah's potential successor to Nasrallah now 'unreachable' since Friday

The sudden death of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah in an Israeli airstrike has left the powerful Lebanese militant group grappling with a leadership crisis. Nasrallah, who led Hezbollah for three decades, was killed in a Friday attack that targeted a Beirut suburb.

Safieddine, who reportedly survived the Israeli attack, currently heads Hezbollah’s Executive Council and is a member of the group’s Jihad Council.

Safieddine, a cousin of Nasrallah and a cleric like his predecessor, has been a prominent figure within Hezbollah for years. He has been outspoken in his criticism of Israel and the United States and has consistently advocated for the Palestinian cause. Read More

OPINION | Netanyahu’s regime change fantasy for Iran: C Raja Mohan

"We seem to be at that fateful moment in the Middle East amid Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s calls for a regime change in Iran and promises that ousting clerical rule in Tehran will herald a new era of peace and prosperity in the Middle East."

Despite the worldwide anger against Israel’s use of extreme force against Hamas and Hezbollah, Netanyahu has now lent a broader and breathtaking political objective to his costly military campaign — regime change in Iran. He is saying that the war against Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Houthis — Iran’s regional allies — is not enough to ensure Israel’s security. And that the war must necessarily culminate in the elimination of the very source of the problem, the Islamic Republic of Iran. READ MORE

Israel Iran War News Live: Here's more on India's strategic ties with Israel and Iran

India, which has strategic ties with both Israel and Iran, is attempting to stay ambivalent at the moment.

The strategic relationship with Israel, especially the defence and security partnership, has grown and deepened under the Narendra Modi government. The two sides have strong shared concerns over extremism and terrorism. Israel has emerged as a major defence supplier alongside the US, France, and Russia — and New Delhi remembers that the Israelis had stepped up at its time of crisis during the Kargil war in 1999.

Iran, on the other hand, has been a major supplier of crude to India. Also, the two countries share concerns on terrorism emanating from Pakistan and Afghanistan, and on the Taliban’s treatment of minorities and lack of an inclusive and representative government in Kabul. The Chabahar port is a project of great strategic and economic importance to India.

Past tensions between Israel and Iran have brought discomfiture to New Delhi. Widening of the conflict in the Middle East will make it difficult for India to stay ambivalent.

Israel Iran War News Live: The importance of Hashem Safieddine

As Israel targets Hezbollah’s headquarters in Beirut and its leader Hashem Safieddine, we take a quick look at who he is and his importance in the region:

📌 Since the death of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, Safieddine has been touted as his likely successor. Safieddine, a cousin of Nasrallah and a cleric like his predecessor, has been outspoken in his criticism of Israel and the United States, and has consistently advocated for the Palestinian cause.

📌 Born in 1964 in southern Lebanon, Safieddine has long been groomed as Nasrallah’s successor. He was called back from Iran in the 1990s, where he had been pursuing studies, to take on a leadership role within Hezbollah. Just two years after Nasrallah took the reins of Hezbollah, Safieddine was appointed head of the group’s Executive Council.

📌 Safieddine has managed Hezbollah’s civilian operations, overseeing areas such as the group’s education system and finances, while Nasrallah focused on strategic matters.

📌 In 2017, the US State Department designated Safieddine a terrorist. The same year, he was also was blacklisted by Saudi Arabia for his role in supporting Hezbollah’s activities and his backing of the Syrian regime.
