A Virginia man, who tearfully claimed he was “suffering” after his wife’s disappearance, now faces accusations of killing her and concealing her body.

Naresh Bhatt, 37, was arrested on August 22 after an investigation into the disappearance of his wife, Mamta Kafle Bhatt, 28, led authorities to suspect foul play.

Mamta was last seen on July 27 at UVA Health Prince William Medical Center, where she worked as a registered nurse.

She was reported missing on August 5 by her husband, who initially told police she might have gone to visit relatives in New York or Texas. However, authorities later discovered she had no relatives in those states, and her phone had been active until August 1.

Court documents reveal that investigators found substantial digital and forensic evidence at the couple’s Manassas Park home, including blood stains and evidence suggesting Mamta’s body was dragged out of the residence.

Bhatt is accused of purchasing knives and cleaning supplies shortly after the alleged murder on July 30, raising suspicions that he attempted to cover up the crime.

Bhatt, a former US Army Reserve specialist, emotionally appealed for his wife’s return in interviews with the media, claiming he and their young daughter were waiting for her.

However, his statements to investigators were inconsistent, and he eventually stopped cooperating with the police.

Authorities believe Bhatt was preparing to flee, as they found a packed suitcase and evidence that he had sold his Tesla and was attempting to sell the couple’s home. He is currently being held without bond and is scheduled for a bond hearing on August 26.

Mamta’s parents, who reside in Nepal, have been granted emergency visas to the US to care for their granddaughter, who has been in the custody of social services since Bhatt’s arrest.
