Hamas on Monday hailed the Jerusalem attack and called on the Palestinians to “escalate the confrontation with the occupation and its settlers”.
Calling the shooting a “heroic operation”, the Palestinian militant group said, “We affirm that this operation is a natural response to the occupation’s crimes and war of extermination it is waging against our people.”
The group, however, did not take responsibility for the attack.
At least five people were killed and twelve others were injured when attackers opened fire on a packed bus at Ramot Junction in Jerusalem.
The shooting was reported at MDA’s 101 Dispatch Center at 10.13 am local time, following which medical services were rushed to the place.
Police said the attackers were ‘neutralised’ soon after the shooting began. Their identities and conditions are not immediately known.
Court cancels Netanyahu’s testimony
The Jerusalem District Court cancelled Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s testimony in criminal trial, scheduled for today, due to the deadly shooting.
The Prime Minister’s Office in a statement said that Netanyahu is holding a “situation assessment” with the heads of the security establishment following the attack.
Among those killed, one man was aged 50, and the other three were aged 30, the state’s paramedic said. Five people with serious gunshot wounds were provided immediate medical treatment and were rushed to the hospital.
Opposition leader Yair Lapid also condemned the attack, sending condolences to the families of those dead and speedy recovery to the wounded. He also expressed support for Israeli security forces “in their efforts to thwart terrorism”.
“A terrible terrorist attack this morning in Jerusalem in which four innocent Israelis were murdered. I strengthen the security forces in their efforts to thwart terrorism. Sending deep condolences to the families of the murdered and a speedy recovery to the wounded,” he wrote on X.
