Nine residents have died and one remains in critical condition after a fire tore through an assisted living facility in Fall River, Massachusetts, on Sunday night, according to the state’s Department of Fire Services. The blaze erupted at Gabriel House Assisted Living Facility around 9:30 p.m., sending heavy flames and smoke through the main entrance of the three-story building.
Roughly 70 residents were living at Gabriel House at the time. As the fire spread, desperate occupants were seen hanging out of windows awaiting rescue, Fall River Fire Chief Jeffrey Bacon said. “We had at least a dozen people rescued over ladders,” Bacon told reporters, adding that dozens more were saved in a joint effort by the fire, police, and EMS teams.
About 50 firefighters responded to the scene. Five of them were hospitalised with non-life-threatening injuries. Multiple residents were declared dead at the site, while others were taken to nearby hospitals. According to the Fire Department nine people have so far been confirmed dead.
The fire was contained to one wing of the building, but smoke damage was reported throughout the facility. Bacon noted that Gabriel House was equipped with sprinklers, and alarms were audible during a press conference Monday morning. However, he said it was unclear if the alarms were functioning properly at the time of the incident.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Gabriel House, located about 50 miles south of Boston, has operated since 1999 and contains 100 residential units, according to the state’s Department of Health and Social Services.
