A former US Department of Justice (DOJ) employee has been arrested for allegedly throwing a Subway sandwich at a federal agent in Washington DC, amid heightened federal security operations ordered by President Donald Trump. According to court documents cited by BBC and The New York Times, the suspect, identified as Sean Charles Dunn, 37, was a trial attorney in the DOJ’s Criminal Division.

He was fired after video footage of the incident surfaced.

Prosecutors say Dunn confronted a group of federal agents, repeatedly calling them “fascists” and using profanities. In footage cited in the criminal complaint, he is seen crossing the street toward a Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer, shouting, “Why are you here? I don’t want you in my city,” before returning and throwing a “submarine-style” sandwich at the officer’s chest.

The officer was not reported injured.

Dunn fled on foot but was later apprehended. Investigators said he confessed, telling officers, “I did it. I threw a sandwich.”

Dunn faces charges of assaulting a federal officer. Under US law, the offense carries a maximum penalty of one year in prison, or up to eight years if it involves physical contact or intent to commit another felony.

A local judge initially declined to press charges, but a federal judge later allowed the case to proceed. Dunn is currently free on bail.

Attorney General, US Attorney react

US Attorney General Pam Bondi wrote on social media that Dunn was “NO LONGER” employed by the DOJ and had been charged with a felony. “If you touch any law enforcement officer, we will come after you,” she added, calling him “an example of the Deep State we have been up against for seven months.”

Jeanine Pirro, US Attorney for Washington DC, said in an online video, “He thought it was funny. Well, he doesn’t think it’s funny today, because we charged him with a felony. So there, stick your Subway sandwich somewhere else.”

The confrontation took place shortly before President Trump announced that his administration would temporarily take over Washington DC’s police force, deploying National Guard troops and federal agents from multiple agencies, including the FBI, US Marshals, ATF, DHS, and the Secret Service. Trump has defended the move as part of his effort to tackle crime and remove “drugged-out maniacs and homeless people.”
