‘Do not travel’ warning issued after major rail disruption at UK’s Leeds station over signal fault

Passengers travelling to Leeds railway station in the United Kingdom are facing major disruption issues with their journeys cancelled or about two-hour delayed due to a fault with the signalling system.

Weekend plans for thousands were affected as all railway lines in Leeds were shut down amid major faults in the signalling system. A ‘do not travel’ warning was reportedly issued by CrossCountry, LNER, Northern and TransPennine Express for the consumers as all the lines were blocked, Metro reported.

Informing about the issue, Network Rail said the signalling fault started around 4pm (local time) and was fixed by 5pm (local time) but a major disruption had occurred till then. The Leeds railway station opened at 6pm (local time) but journeys were affected due to the fault in the signal system.

A statement by train operator Northern said “Severe disruption on all its services. We ask that customers do not travel.”

A Network Rail spokesperson said “We are sorry for the inconvenience this is causing. We strongly urge passengers to check their journeys before travelling,” BBC reported.

Which are the routes affected

According to National Rail updates on its website, some of the routes that were affected include:

CrossCountry between Penzance / Plymouth / Bristol Temple Meads and Edinburgh, between Reading and Newcastle, and between Plymouth and Leeds / Glasgow Central.

LNER between London Kings Cross and Bradford Forster Square / Skipton / Leeds / Harrogate.

TransPennine Express between Liverpool Lime Street and Newcastle / Edinburgh, between Hull / Scarborough and Leeds, and between Manchester Victoria and Leeds / York / Scarborough / Saltburn / Redcar Central.

The National Rail further informed that tickets issued by CrossCountry, LNER and TransPennine Express on July 26 will remain valid for travel on July 27.
