Flights at Denmark’s Copenhagen Airport have been suspended or diverted after the sightings of “2-3 large drones” in the area nearby, a police statement said. A CNN report quoted an airport spokesperson who confirmed the development.

Copenhagen Airport, which is considered Scandinavian countries’ largest airport, on Monday night said that “unidentified drones” have grounded flights that were bound for takeoff and the drone sightings have also forced other flights to divert to nearby airports, Associated Press reported.

Copenhagen Police in a statement on X said, “two to three large drones have been seen flying in the area” and that it remains unclear how long the flight disruption will last. Footage from the local media showed a significant police presence in the region of the airport.

According to the Copenhagen Airport spokesperson, the airport’s airspace had been shut since 8:30pm (local time) due to the “unidentified” drones. No flights have been allowed to depart or land since then.

The airport informed on X that drones were still around the airport as of 11:17pm (local time). As per a notice by the US Federal Aviation Administration’s Notice to Airmen, or NOTAM system, the airport is bound to remain closed until 11am (local time), CNN reported.

Flights that were scheduled to take off from the Danish capital have either been delayed or canceled, the Copenhagen Airport said. The airport authorities added that flights that were scheduled to land were redirected to other airports in Denmark and while some of them were sent to Gothenburg and Malmö in Sweden.

In a separate incident, a similar event of drone sighting took place at Norway’s capital Oslo airport on Monday evening that forced all the traffic to move to one runway, according to Norwegian broadcaster NRK. Though the traffic has returned to normal at the Oslo airport, it wasn’t clear who was responsible for the incident, AP reported.
