The CEO of UnitedHealthcare, Brian Thompson, was fatally shot in Midtown Manhattan on Wednesday morning, according to a police report, New York Times reported.
Thompson, 50, was walking towards the New York Hilton Hotel, dressed in a suit and tie, to attend a UnitedHealthcare conference being held in the hotel’s ballroom, when a gunman opened fire from approximately 20 feet away, striking Thompson multiple times in the chest.
He was rushed to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, the NYPD reported.
According to report, the gunman had been waiting for some time before Thompson’s arrival and fled immediately after shooting him.
Details surrounding the incident remain unclear, but authorities believe it was a targeted attack. No arrests have been made so far, and the investigation is ongoing, police added.
Thompson, who became CEO of the company in April 2021, led the healthcare arm of UnitedHealth Group, which is ranked fifth on the Fortune 500 list.
